The Ultimate Guide to Planning Your Newborn Photoshoot (Without the Stress)

23 July 2025

Planning a newborn photoshoot shouldn’t feel like planning a wedding. But with everything you’re juggling—baby prep, hospital bags, choosing a name—it can feel like one more thing on your never-ending to-do list. Don’t worry. This guide breaks down everything you need to know so you can walk into your session calm, confident, and ready to capture the magic.

Timing Is Everything

The best time to photograph newborns is within the first 5–14 days after birth. That’s when they’re still sleepy, snuggly, and curl up easily into those heart-melting poses. But don’t wait until your baby arrives to book your photographer—secure your spot during your second trimester to guarantee availability.

Your photographer will tentatively book your due date, and once baby arrives, you’ll lock in a firm session date.

Choose Your Style (And Photographer)

Do you love minimalist, natural light images with soft tones? Or are you into posed studio-style portraits with wraps and props? Pick a style that speaks to your aesthetic. Then find a photographer whose work is consistent and whose vibe feels right.

Read their reviews, check their Instagram stories to get a feel for their personality, and ask them about their approach. You want someone who’s gentle with babies, understands lighting, and creates a calm, safe space.

Understand the Experience

A professional newborn photography session is baby-led, slow-paced, and designed to be stress-free. At HelloBABY Photography, for example, we allow plenty of time for feeding, cuddling, and settling. There’s no pressure—just gentle direction and lots of care.

Sessions usually last between 1.5–3 hours. Some are held in-studio (with access to props, wraps, and backdrops), while others are in-home lifestyle sessions where we work with your space and natural light.

For parents, go with soft, neutral tones that photograph beautifully and don’t distract from your baby. Think creams, taupes, whites, and dusty pastels. Avoid loud logos or busy patterns.

For your baby, less is more. Most sessions include soft swaddles, wraps, or simple babywear. Your photographer may provide styling guidance or even a full client wardrobe.

Tip: Natural textures like linen, cotton, and knits photograph especially well.

Many parents worry about being in front of the camera so soon after birth—but remember: you don’t need to look perfect. What matters is the emotion. The snuggles. The love.

Whether it’s you, your partner, siblings, or even pets—if it’s part of your story, include it. These are your memories.

What to Bring

Here’s where I want to shift your thinking from “cost” to “investment.” These aren’t just photos – they’re:

Family heirlooms: Images that will be passed down through generations

Memory preservation: Your baby’s first days, captured forever

Artwork for your home: Professional prints that become part of your family’s story

Social sharing gold: Let’s be honest, you want those gram-worthy announcement photos

When you break down the price per image, especially considering you’ll treasure these for literally your entire life, the value becomes clear.

Most newborn sessions require minimal prep. But here’s a checklist of handy items to have on hand:

  • Spare nappies & wipes
  • Extra wraps or blankets (if you have favourites)
  • A dummy (even if your baby doesn’t usually take one—it can help soothe them briefly)
  • Snacks or water for you
  • A change of clothes (just in case baby has an accident mid-photo!)

Your photographer will likely provide most props, wraps, and backgrounds—but always check what’s included.

On the day of your session:

  • Try to keep baby awake for a little while before the shoot (a bath works wonders!)
  • Feed baby just before you leave or as soon as you arrive at the studio
  • Dress them in something easy to remove without going over the head
  • Take a deep breath—you’ve got this

Your photographer will do most of the work. Your job? Relax, cuddle, and soak up the moment.

Sometimes babies cry. Or poop on the photographer. Or decide they’re wide awake and not interested in sleeping. That’s okay.

A great photographer knows how to adapt to your baby’s rhythm, pivot as needed, and still create beautiful images. Trust the process—it’s not about perfection, it’s about connection.

Tiny fingers. Wrinkled toes. Eyelashes and belly buttons. Great newborn photography includes all the little features you’ll want to remember long after they’ve grown.

Ask your photographer to include detail shots. These images add variety to your gallery and tell the full story of your baby’s earliest days.

Don’t let your images live on a USB or sit forgotten in your inbox. Ask about albums, fine art prints, or wall galleries during your consultation.

Printed photos become family heirlooms. They’re the ones your baby will look at when they’re older and say, “That’s me with Mum and Dad when I was brand new.”

  • Ask your photographer if they include retouching (to remove baby acne, flaky skin, etc.)
  • Check if hair and makeup is included or can be added to your session
  • Consider scheduling your shoot for mid-morning when babies tend to be sleepiest

Your newborn shoot should feel like a celebration—not a chore. With the right photographer and a little preparation, it can be one of the most beautiful experiences of your new journey.

The photos you take today will become tomorrow’s most treasured memories. So plan with intention, trust your instincts, and enjoy every quiet, magical second.
